Editing

Editing for Creative Prose & Poetry

Editing and revision are integral to the creative writing process, and as it is with writing, the editing process for creative work is as unique as each writer is.

For creative work, the steps of editing are often blurred. The editing process, like the writing process, is not always linear. For this reason, I often focus more on process than the final product.

Of course, the end result is important, too, but it's in the process that the creative "magic" happens.

Because my emphasis is on process, with an eye on quality over quantity, I approach editing for creative work with a much more holistic, author-centric focus.

Therefore, my editing services are customized to meet each client’s needs and expectations, which means that you don’t need to know if you need developmental editing, line editing, copyediting, and/or proofreading. With my author-centric approach, we’ll figure out where you are and what you need (editing-wise) together.

This is just another part of the boutique experience.

Technical, Business & Academic Editing

With "non-creative" writing, clarity of the message is generally the primary focus (in addition to accuracy and tone). This is a sharp—and important—distinction between creative writing and technical, business, and academic writing. Thus, out of necessity, my editorial approach for these types of manuscripts is much more structured than that for creative writing.

Editing for technical, business, and academic prose typically involves the following aspects:

Paragraph Organization, Sentence Structure & Coherence

Does the prose make sense? Does all the information within a paragraph connect together logically? Are there a variety of sentence structures used?

Transitions, Flow

& Cohesion

Effective communication is persuasive communication. Technical manuscripts should have clear transitional words/phrases and logical flow of information for optimum effectiveness.

Word Choice/Wordiness,

Grammar & Clarity

Clear communication is effective communication. Therefore, precise word choice is important, as is grammatical accuracy.
